Introduction
My friends call me Sparky Sparks and I have been supplying and installing kitchen appliances, also known as white goods, for nearly 30 years and during that time I have seen many changes.
When I started my electrical career, it was very easy to dismantle almost any domestic appliance, find the fault, repair it and rebuild the appliance. Now, with the addition of electronic components, this has become much more complicated, and in fact, it is often cheaper and quicker to throw the appliance away and buy a new one (hence the term throw away society). Obviously this is not compatible with our green aspirations, so the following article is a tongue in cheek look at how we could use our kitchen appliances in a more environmentally friendly way, both during and after their working lives.
Sharing to Save the Planet
We have all heard of sharing the bath water to save money and more importantly to save the Planet !
How about sharing kitchen appliances ?
How many times do you run your washing machine or dishwasher at half capacity ?
Is your fridge always full?
Could you make room for an extra casserole when you use your cooker?
Why not get together with a few of your neighbours or friends and arrange a simple rota where you contact each other whenever you are using one of your domestic appliances below full capacity and ask them if they have anything they would want washing/cooking/ or chilling etc.
Small Kitchen Appliances
You could also set up a small appliance club (a bit like a book club). And Contribute an equal amount of money, to maintain, repair or replace, small domestic appliances, which could then be used as and when required, by members of the club. This could include toasters, juicers, sandwich makers, irons, slow cookers, steamers, food mixers, microwaves, etc.
And why stop at kitchen appliances, you could include vacuum cleaners, paint-strippers, lawnmowers, power tools, steam cleaners, pressure washers, desk fans, oil filled radiators, portable air conditioning units, camping stoves, etc.
You could ask an electrician to come and test all the appliances once a year (PAT Testing), to cover any safety/insurance issues.
This would be a great way to save money save the planet and make friends with your neighbours at the same time!!!
Life After Live
What happens to your appliances when they die? Instead of going to that great big land fill site in the sky, perhaps they could be resurrected or born again, with a totally different purpose? Ie an old fridge would make a good storage unit in the shed (with holes drilled in the doors for ventilation), a washing machine and dryer, with a length of old kitchen worktop on top, would make a good make shift workbench in the garage, with some internal space for odd shaped objects included.
You could even propagate vegetable plants in an old glass door type cooker.
Multi Tasking
Whilst we are on the subject have you ever considered using your appliances for more than one purpose? Ie How about cooking your boil in the bag meal for one in the dishwasher? Or try boiling your egg for breakfast in the kettle whilst making your cup of tea?
How about using your hairdryer as a paint-stripper?
Or Your Dyson upright vacuum cleaner as an oversized humane spider catcher!
Or even try drying your cotton socks and undies in the oven after you have made the evening meal and the oven is cooling down!
OK this article is just for fun and shouldn't be taken too literally! But hopefully it will get YOU and more importantly the manufacturers thinking about how they can make and how we can use our everyday electrical appliances more economically and do our bit for the planet!
